Understanding the Beauty of Life
My dear friends, mis amigos, habibis! How are you all? I am very great! I am back in beautiful California, simply enjoying the weather and my lovely family and friends. You know, it was always a dream of mine to visit Jerusalem. And to have had the chance to go, I am very grateful and amazed. I'm amazed because I set my mind on this dream and I made it happen. I worked hard and saved up. So my good friends, anything can be achieved. First breath and close your eyes, imagine your dream and go for it! Who is the world to tell you what you can and cannot do?!
The Palestinians were so welcoming and sweet to me! It's the first time that I have traveled, where I have not felt home sick. People helped me and showed me around when I was lost or when I wanted to see something new. I discovered the Old City of Jerusalem and all of its quarters; the Christian Quarter, the Jewish Quarter, the Armenian Quarter, and the Muslim Quarter. After spending some time in each, I realized...we are more alike then we would like to admit.
I was baptized Catholic but don't practice much of it. But, I was able to have a connection with God in Bethlehem, at the birthplace of Jesus. The peace was so beautiful. I felt an essence of calm and hope. I was also very happy to see many people from all over the world come together for one man--Jesus. If many of us can come together for him, can many of us come together to make him proud? Instead of competing with one another to boost our own pride? Why is the place that is supposed to be the holiest place on the planet, maybe even the universe, plagued by so many problems and sadness? I understand and have compassion for my Palestinians...but the Israelis and Jewish people deserve a place to call home too. They are both human...like me and you.
I made many new friends while in the Middle East, of all races and religions! I was happy to coexist with them and share my dreams. We all have hope, love, and have experienced hardships in life and I am glad I was able to inspire them, because they have inspired me. I enjoyed various Arab dishes, lots of Jewish Challah bread, and tons of coffee and tea! One of my good friends, Lina, always kept me well fed and allowed me to experience a true Palestinian household, I cannot thank her enough.I must be off to study and ponder about the beauty of life. Please stay sane and humble my habibis. Everyday can be as sweet as honey, you just have to try and smile.
